a grow beyond expectations
What is a Smartphone
ARC Group defines low-end smartphones as rich media phones that are
basically terminals with advanced user interface and embedding more
than three features such as music and video player and recorder,
camera, MMS, Games, web browsing, Synchronisation with PC, Bluetooth,
etc.
What is the market
Smartphones are specifically targeting high-end and mid-range segments of
the consumer market. In terms of functionality, the gap between
smartphones and feature rich phones is more and more close so the
addressable market has grown and is still growing beyond expectations.
Around 7% of the handsets shipped in 2005 (49.4m units) will have a
smart operating system and this to expand around 37% over the next 5-8 years. [Nomura]
The Platforms
Symbian is currently the most used OS for high-end smartphones, with 15% share.
However, Symbian's worldwide share of
this market is expected to decrease over the years, falling to around
40% by 2013 for mostly benefit of Microsoft.
The Future
Adobe is very agressive porting his Flash Lite Player on Nokia
(serie 40 and 60), Brew handsets, Samsung, LG and more. The market is growing fast!
